Beyond the Buzzwords: Decoding Talent at the Digital Transformation Conference
Some of my thoughts and key points from my talk.
I spent the day at London arm of the Digital Transformation Conference
https://digitaltransformationconf.co.uk/
It’s one of the best on the circuit. It attracts a real range of great speakers and participants.
My day there involved navigating a labyrinth of tech jargon and silently critiquing PowerPoint aesthetics, punctuated by my own presentation on the crucial elements I seek when building teams in today's digitally-driven world. The core message? Forget the compliant cogs; I'm hunting for intellectually agile individuals – those who possess true education, not mere training. That distinction is critical.
Education vs. Training: A Fundamental Divide
Training equips individuals with the how of a task. Education delves into the why, scrutinising its very existence and potential alternatives. While training ensures immediate task completion, education fosters those who will redefine roles, challenge established structures, potentially architect innovative solutions, and perhaps even launch a podcast dissecting the entire process.
So, what are the tangible qualities I prioritise?
The Foundational Behaviors of Impactful Teams
Building a truly dynamic team transcends mere intelligence. It requires individuals who consistently demonstrate:
Creativity and Vision: Not just incremental improvements, but the ability to conceive entirely new paradigms.
Innovative Thinking: Generating solutions that trigger genuine surprise and a sense of novelty.
Big-Picture Perspective: Prioritizing strategic rationale over mere task execution – asking "Why?" before "How?".
Collaboration: Seamlessly integrating and contributing effectively within team dynamics, even in asynchronous digital environments.
Communication: Articulating ideas with clarity and conciseness, eschewing the crutch of overly complex presentations.
Active Listening: Engaging fully with others' perspectives, rather than simply waiting for an opportunity to speak.
Constructive Feedback (Giving and Receiving): Engaging with critique and praise professionally and maturely.
Open-mindedness and Adaptability: Embracing ambiguity and navigating change with resilience.
Continuous Learning: Possessing an inherent drive to expand their knowledge and skill sets.
Flexibility to Change: Remaining agile and effective amidst evolving circumstances.
However, within the tech sector, and arguably across most industries, there's a significant deficit in one crucial area:
The Indispensable Nature of Creativity
We are in dire need of creative thinkers. Yet, a common misconception equates creativity solely with artistic expression of some sort. While art is a valuable facet, creativity is a far broader and often less conventionally aesthetic force. It's the messy, iterative engine of meaningful progress, particularly vital in a rapidly evolving industry. It can be in maths, or engineering or anything. As humans we are innately creative in everything we do. Learn to ride that horse.
Decoding True Creativity: Beyond the Canvas
Creativity isn't confined to berets and mood boards. Often, it manifests as a simple, yet profound, "What if…?" Or “Why?” that ignites transformative change.
Creativity emerges from Curiousity. This is no secret to artists. When I see a collection of an artist’s works, others see finished works. I see each piece as containing answers to the artist’s questions and the asking of a new set of questions.
So how do you assess all that at interview? Well you need to look for the following.
Key indicators of creative potential include:
Relentless Curiosity: A persistent drive to question assumptions and explore underlying principles.
Intellectual Openness: A willingness to consider unconventional ideas without immediate dismissal.
Calculated Risk-Taking: The courage to experiment and potentially fail publicly in pursuit of innovation.
Unyielding Resilience: The ability to learn from setbacks and persevere through challenges.
Playful Problem-Solving: Approaching complexities with ingenuity and a touch of levity.
Imaginative Association: The capacity to forge unexpected connections between seemingly disparate concepts.
Constructive Nonconformity: Not just breaking rules, but reimagining and rewriting them thoughtfully.
Informed Intuition: Balancing data-driven analysis with gut feelings honed by experience.
Keen Sensitivity: An acute awareness of nuances that can be translated into meaningful insights.
Passionate Attention to Detail: A deep care for even seemingly minor elements, like typography, recognizing their impact.
Focused Intensity (in bursts): The ability to achieve deep concentration and flow for specific periods.
Strategic Daydreaming: Utilising moments of reflection as a catalyst for ideation.
Autonomous Drive: Thriving with clearly defined goals rather than rigid methodologies.
Tolerance for Ambiguity: Comfort in navigating uncertainty and the unknown.
Solution-Oriented Humour: Employing wit to navigate challenges and foster a positive environment.
In Conclusion: Cultivating a Culture of Creation
As you evaluate your teams, or consider your next hires, ask yourself: are you fostering a collection of task executors, or a collective of innovators? Are you surrounded by those who maintain the status quo, or those who actively seek to redefine it?
In this era of constant flux, our success hinges not on filling seats, but on empowering idea-slingers. And yes, a heightened appreciation for the power of a well-chosen font wouldn't hurt either.
